The most common thyroid dysfunction are :
- Hypothyroidism
- Hyperthyroidism
- Thyroid nodules
Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough of the thyroid hormone called thyroxine (T4). The lack of this hormone causes the body’s system to slow down and can lead to symptoms like fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain due to fluid retention, dry skin, and hair loss.
Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid gland is overactive, overproducing the thyroid hormone. Excessive hormone production can cause symptoms as restlessness, nervousness, irregular heartbeat, shaking, anxiety, trouble sleeping, weight loss, muscle weakness.
Thyroid nodules are growths that form on or in the thyroid gland. Most of the nodules formed are often benign and do not cause any symptoms but should be monitored during the yearly physical check-up.
Lab tests and an ultrasound can help your doctor make the correct diagnose.
