The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires commercial drivers to have a regular physical exam to be compliant and continue working. The goal is to ensure that drivers are in good health, and they can work safely.

The DOT physical exam follows strict guidelines, and it is mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

What to Bring to a DOT Physical

    1. Complete list of medications, including the dosage regimen, dosages, and their doctors’ names and addresses
    2. If the driver has vision or hearing problems, the driver must bring their eyeglasses, contacts, or hearing aids
    3. If the driver has diabetes, the driver must bring the most recent lab results, showing their Hemoglobin A1C (HgAIC) results.
    4. Drivers with heart-related issues must, at a minimum, bring a letter from their cardiologist. The letter must outline their medical history and current medications, and indicates that they are safe to work

Here are some of the exams that you can expect during your visit to the immigration medical exam.

  • Physical Examination
  • Medical Review
  • Chest X-Ray
  • Blood Tests for Syphilis

You should expect, for your physical exam, an examination of the ears, eyes, nose, and throat, heart, extremities, lungs, lymph nodes, abdomen, and skin.

The purpose of the immigration exam is to screen for existing medical conditions to complete the immigration process. The immigration exam is not a substitute for your complete annual physical exam in any form.

We hear some questions like will my child also need these tests?

The answer is No. Usually, children under 15 years of age are not required to undergo chest X-rays and blood tests during the immigration medical exams.

Preventive medicine is critical to help you live longer, with a healthier life, and it will ultimately keep your family’s health care costs down.  Vaccination can significantly improve outcomes if you happen to still catch the virus.

We can provide vaccination for children over 5 years of age and adult immunization. Some of the vaccines available at Clinica de Luz are:

  • Influenza
  • Tetanus
  • Measles
  • Varicella
  • Zoster
  • HPV – Human Papillomavirus
  • Hepatites
  • Meningitis

The most common drug testing is performed by evaluating the blood and or urine to determine if the person is using drugs. It can also be achieved by testing saliva, hair, or any other biological sample. Drug tests are usually required for:

  • Pre-employment drug screening test to identify on-the-job drug abuse.
  • Sports – athletic drug testing.
  • Post-accident drug testing – when a vehicular or on-the-job accident may have involved human error and resulted in casualties or property damage.
  • Safety-related drug testing – if an employee’s job could lead to safety issues if the judgment or physical ability were impaired.
If you need a drug test to be administered, give us a call to find out more what you will need to prepare for your test.

An electrocardiogram exam, most known as EKG Test, is a simple procedure that measures the electrical signals in your heart.  This test can show any irregularity with your heart strength and beat. It is a painless test and usually is requested to find or monitor heart disorders like:

  • Blocked arteries
  • Heart failure

Your doctor might ask an EKG test if you have been complaining of :

  • Chest pain
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Dizziness & fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

It is a common request from schools and sport’s coaches to request a physical exam before the sports season starts. At Clinica de Luz, we perform your kid’s health evaluation and physical exam.
